Dance Before the Lord

David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the Lord with all his might.  2 Samuel 6:14

A few weeks ago my daughter-in-law sent me a picture of their three-year old son, Graham, dancing with a precious little girl, Campbell.  Graham and Campbell’s mothers try to get these two little ones together every few weeks for a play date.

On this particular day, their play date was at the Library, where Graham proceeded to say, “Come dance with me, Campbell”!

I love their innocence and how they are and completely uninhibited to who is watching and what is going on around them.  They are just enjoying their friendship and their time together.

As I looked at Graham and Campbell’s sweet faces, I thought of how God desires us to live our lives completely surrendered to Him, to praise and worship Him with complete abandonment!

Often, we come before Him, acutely aware of others around us and are more concerned of what others think than what the Lord thinks.  Though we feel like lifting our hands…singing our hearts out, and even dancing, we hold back, fearful of what others will think or say.

However, King David danced before the Lord.  David brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing.  God’s word says, “David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the Lord with all his might”, 2 Samuel 6:14.

David danced with complete abandonment.  However, when Michal, daughter of Saul, saw David dancing, she despised him.  She even asked him how the King of Israel could act in such a way.

David replied, “It was before the Lord, whose chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people – Israel – I will celebrate before the Lord”.  2 Samuel 6:21

David did not care what Michal or others thought; he was dancing before the Lord.

Shouldn’t I be more like David?  Shouldn’t I be more concerned of what God thinks of me than what others think?

Though I have a precious picture of sweet Graham and Campbell dancing together, I also have a mental picture of David dancing before the Lord with complete abandonment.  I want to do the same!  I want to be willing to worship God with all my heart…I want to lift my hands…make a joyful noise, and if the Lord leads me, dance before Him with all my might!

Dear Heavenly Father…forgive me for the times I have been more concerned with what others think than what you think.  I want to live me life completely surrendered to you…willing to pour my heart during praise and worship!  Let me worship you with complete abandonment!  And if you lead me to dance…I want to dance before you…for your glory!!
