My goal
is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may
have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the
mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge…Colossians 2:2-3
A few weekends ago, I had the
pleasure of keeping all three of my daughter’s sons!
My husband and I have been
blessed to have the two older boys sleepover…and their youngest son sleepover,
but this was the first time that we had all three children sleepover at the
same time!
These little darlings arrived
around 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning! With
huge smiles on their faces, the older two boys walked through my door…lugging
their little suitcases behind him…ready to start their weekend of fun!
Moments later, we had Gabe out of
his car seat so he could join the fun as well!
As I chatted with their mama, the
boys immediately headed to the playroom and the closet with all of their books
and toys!
With much enthusiasm and
excitement, the boys quickly filled the living room floor with some of their
favorite toys!
They also found the new Lego sets
that I had purchased, and were rapidly opening those boxes to begin building a
school bus and a helicopter!
After my daughter left, we made
brownies for my mom’s birthday and were planning on delivering her birthday
treat to her after lunch!
The morning quickly passed and
lunch was soon over, so we headed to my mom’s to deliver the homemade goodies!
Hudson carried the brownies…Beau
carried the birthday card…and I carried Gabe in his car seat! I’m sure we were quite the sight as we headed
to our car!
After buckling everyone in…we
were off! Fortunately, my mom lives only
minutes away, so the car ride was short!
However, as we approached our
first red light, I was quite surprised to hear both Hudson and Beau say….”Gammy…blow
through the red light”!
And of course my immediate
response was…”Boys, we don’t do that! We
could cause a serious accident”!
Thinking they would agree with
me, I was quite surprised by their next statement…”Mommy and Daddy blow through
red lights”!!
Surely they were wrong! Had they seen their parents turn right on red
and somehow thought they were “blowing” through red lights?
And where did they hear the
expression…”Let’s blow through the red stop lights”?
I know my daughter and son-in-law
too well to even think that they would put their children in danger, so didn’t
give it another thought as we arrived at my mom’s!
However, the subject came up
again as we were heading to church the following morning.
As we approached our first red
light, Hudson and Beau again said…”Gammy, let’s blow through the red light”!
And this time they added… Luke
and Tessa (dear friends of my daughter and husband)…blow through red lights
too!
Completely baffled…I turned
around as I stopped at the red light to again inforce the rule that we do now
“blow” through red lights!
However, as I turned
around…Hudson and Beau were sitting in their car seats with their cheeks puffed
out….literally “blowing” with their mouths!
The light went on…and I
realized…they were trying to show me how to literally blow through the red
light!
All I could do was laugh at my
confusion…and then listen as they told me when you blow…its magic…and the red
light will turn green!
Feeling quite relieved at the new
found definition of what it means to “blow through red lights”…we headed on to
church!
When my daughter arrived home
later that day I asked her about this! She
quickly revealed to me that Luke and Tessa had told Hudson and Beau that if you
blow while you are waiting on the red light…it will turn green!
I also learned, that Tessa would
watch the other light…and when it turned yellow…knew it was ok to blow…knowing
that their light would turn green soon! So
I learned the magic trick as well!
So, of course these little boys
were trying to do the same thing…change the red light to green with their new
magic trick!
My daughter and I got a kick of
out my confusion…and complete misunderstanding…of those little boys new desire
to blow through red lights!
But isn’t that how we sometimes
feel when we read God’s word?
Sometimes we have to read and
re-read certain passages of scripture to understand what God is saying!
This can also happen if we are
only partially listening to a sermon...sometimes we need to tune everything
else out and really focus…so that we don’t miss what God is trying to share
with us during the message!
And just as it did when I turned
around and really listened to Hudson and Beau…the light went on…and I truly
understood what they were trying to share with me!
God’s word says… My goal is that they may be
encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches
of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God,
namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge…Colossians 2:2-3.
God desires for us to understand
his word. He desires for us grow in
wisdom and knowledge! He desires us to
know Jesus Christ more and more!
And dear friends…though we may
not immediately grasp the meaning of every verse written in the bible…as we
read, study and pray for the scriptures to speak to our hearts …God will help
us to understand His Holy word.
Dear
Heavenly Father…give us understanding…not only in our everyday lives, but also
as we read and study your word! Help us
to grow in wisdom and knowledge so that we may draw closer to you each day!
