Homecoming

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands…2 Corinthians 5:1.

This week is homecoming at Millikin University!!  And last week was homecoming at Maroa-Forsyth, where my children graduated.

As we decorated our offices in honor of homecoming, my mind is filled with treasured memories of my children participating in homecoming activities at their high school.

A week filled with homecoming activities…

Homecoming is the tradition of welcoming back alumni to their school.  It is a tradition in many universities, colleges and high schools in the United States!

Alums often travel home to visit their old high school, college or university during Homecoming week!

They meet up with classmates…chatting…laughing…reminiscing about their days in high school or college…as well as, learning what is new in each other’s lives.

Individuals may have different experiences when they return home.

Coming home can be a joyous occasion if one has fond memories of their hometown or their days spent in high school and college.

In some instances, little has changed since the last time they were home…but in other situations, several things have changed over the years, and your hometown may no longer feel like home!

Maybe coming home is difficult.  The memories you have of your high school or college years are painful, so your homecoming may not be as pleasant as one might hope.

Fortunately, the bible speaks of our eternal home…our home in heaven where there will be no more pain or suffering.

God’s word says… For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands…2 Corinthians 5:1.

As Christians, we have the assurance that once we pass away, we will spend eternity in heaven…a dwelling places…a resting place that God has prepared for us.

I can only imagine how beautiful our heavenly home will be!

Scripture tells us…My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am…John 14:2-3

Not only is God preparing a home for us…building it specifically for us…but He is also coming back and will take us with Him!

Not only will we have a brand new home prepared specifically for each of us…but also our Heavenly Father will be there with welcoming arms!

This will be a homecoming like no other!!

Dear Heavenly Father…thank you for precious memories of cherished moments spent in our homes and hometowns!  And Lord…while we are here on earth…help us to spend each moment bringing glory and honor to your name…until the moment you call us home to heaven!
