Jesus look at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with
God all things are possible”…Matthew 19:26.
When my children were young, they loved
watching the move…Angels in the Outfield!
This movie was about two little foster boys,
Roger and J.P., who loved sneaking in to watch the California Angels play
baseball!
The California Angels are having a rough season
that year and not playing well at all, but the boys still loved cheering for
their favorite team!
Though Roger lives in a foster home, he still
has limited contact with his widower father.
One day, Roger asked his father when they would
be a family again, and his father sarcastically replied, “I’d say when the Angels win the pennant”!
Believing his father’s word, Roger prays to
God, asking God to help the California Angels to win the pennant.
Shortly after praying, Roger and J.P. attend a
game where Roger sees a group of angels in the outfield helping the team. No one can see the angels except for Roger,
so everyone else believes the team’s sudden improvement are freak occurrences!
The Angel’s manager doubts that Roger is truly
seeing angels, but decides to keep him and J.P. around for a good luck
charm. They are given the best
seats…treated to lots of ballpark food…and attend the remainder of the games
that season!
Though the Angel’s manager and fans are skeptical
that the team can really improve and make it to the championship game, Roger
and J.P. believe it is possible and repeatedly exclaim throughout the movie…It could happen!!
That very phrase…It could happen… comes to mind when l think about long-time
rivals…the Cubs and Cardinals playing each other in the playoffs this year!
The Cubs and Cardinals are meeting each other
in the postseason series for the first time in history.
It has been 107 years since the Cubs last won
the World Series.
The Cardinals record is a little better; they
have won the World Series recently…in 2006 and 2011.
Not only have the Cubs not won the World Series
in over 100 years, many diehard Chicago Cub’s fans believe their team is cursed
and this is why their favorite team has not made it to the World Series in
decades!
Who is responsible for this curse?
Believe it or not…a Billy goat!
The superstition dates back to October 6, 1945,
when a local bar owner supposedly placed a hex on the team after kicking his
smelly goat out of Wrigley Field.
And the Cubs have struggled ever since!!
But this season is different!
Though the odds might be against the Cubs
winning the playoffs, I am hopeful and believe it is possible!
Just as the California Angels won the pennant
in the movie (and without the help of angels because that wouldn’t be fair), I
am hoping the Cubs can defeat the Cardinals in the playoffs…so I too am saying…It could happen!
It’s easy to
look at our situation…look at our past records…believe what others are saying
about us…and in the Cubs situation…even believe they are cursed!
We focus on
all of the negatives and feel defeated…believing our situation is hopeless.
However, God’s
word says… Jesus
look at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things
are possible”…Matthew 19:26.
Now, I am not saying that the Cubs are going to
have angels in the outfield…or that God is going to bless them with a victory,
but I am saying that we need to turn to God, trusting Him to be with us in all
situations!
How often do we try to walk
through life in our own strength?
How often do we through up
our hands…give up…walk away…never considering praying and asking God to help
us?
How often do we think…this
is too small…too big…too unimportant to bother God with?
Dear ones…God desires for us
to come to him with all of our cares…concerns…hurts…whatever is on our hearts!
HE cares!
And he desires nothing more
than for us to call upon his name…to seek Him…to trust Him…with whatever we are
facing!
Though I do not know who is
going to win the playoffs…and I do not know what the future is for the Cubs…I
know the ONE who holds the future!
I know the one who holds my
future…and your future!
And the ONE who holds our
futures…desires the very best for us!
So, for the next several
days…while the playoff games are being played…I’m going to continue to say…It could happen!
And yes, I know the
Cardinals won the first playoff game, but I am still hopeful...believing this could still be the year that the Cub’s year to make it to the World Series!!
Dear Heavenly Father…thank you that with You…all
things are possible!! Help us to turn to
you in all situations, praying and asking you to be our strength, and to
remember that nothing is impossible with You!
