Jesus answered, "It is
written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from
the mouth of God.”…Matthew 4:4
One of our family's favorite
restaurants is Texas Roadhouse!
Yes, there is normally a wait, but we
love it and believe it is worth the wait! And fortunately…you can snack
on peanuts while you wait!
And secondly, you are quickly
rewarded for your wait as soon as you are seated!
Your lovely hostess is not only
directing you to your table, but she is carrying a fresh, warm basket of Texas
Roadhouse rolls! Included in the basket is the cinnamon butter, which
quickly melts as soon as you spread it on those delicious, hot rolls!
You can probably smell and taste the
rolls now!
The downside of this is that I can
eat one roll right after the other without giving it a thought! I'm
usually extremely hungry by the time we are seated (and often, if I know we are
going to Texas Roadhouse…I will eat very little that day so I feel like I can
splurge that evening)!
So not only do I eat a couple of
rolls before my meal arrives, but I usually have another roll along with my
meal! I don't even want to think of the calories that I have consumed in
that short period of time!
If I'm really honest, I could eat those
warm, delicious rolls every day...they are that scrumptious!
However, though the rolls are
extremely yummy, they do not provide me with the nutrients that I need each
day! I need to add meats, vegetables and fruits to my daily diet in order
to be healthy!
And though I love the warm bread that
Texas Roadhouse provides, God's tells us. Man shall not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"…Matthew 4:4.
Even as we are driving to this
popular restaurant, I begin to hunger for those delicious rolls…eagerly
anticipating the way they will taste as I take that first bite. But
shouldn't my hunger for God's word be even greater than my hunger for those
warm rolls!
I need to dig into God's word with as
much enthusiasm as I dig into the basket of freshly baked bread. The
rolls will satisfy my appetite for a period, but eventually my hunger returns
and I am ready for more! Hungering for God's word is similar…as I open up
the word of God and study it…it feeds my spirit, but I need to return to it
repeatedly so that my spirit will be well fed!
Though I may love trying to live on
bread (particularly freshly baked bread) alone, I can't! I need a helping
of God's word each day to equip me spiritually for that day!
So the next time you sit down to a
basket of freshly baked bread, remember that you need to feed your spirit as
well! I encourage you to dive into the bible with as much enthusiasm as
you do as basket of rolls! Better yet…have a nice piece of freshly baked
bread as you read and study your bible!
Dear Heavenly Father…thank you
for you providing us with the inspired word of God! Help us Lord to read…study…understand...and
apply your word to our daily lives! Lord, encourage us to feed our
spirits daily! Help us to hunger for more and more of you!!
